Rabbit Bone Allograft

Model Utility:
In this model, an allograft bone strut is wired to the femur to simulate periprothetic fracture repair. The model is designed to permit the evaluation of differences in bone healing with and without the presence of osteoinductive active materials. This study typically runs for 8 weeks and includes radiography and histology for assessments of bone repair.
- Allograft rabbit bone samples are ordered several weeks in advance of the study starting date.
- Rabbits undergo a bilateral graft onlay procedure to the proximal femur (right and left legs are randomized to the various treatment groups).
- Steel sutures are used to secure the allograft onto the underlying bone
- Radiography assessments are made approximately every 2 weeks.
- Specific bone dyes are administered throughout the study to aid in the histology evaluations at the termination of the study.

The study below shows one test article from a series evaluated. All test articles were evaluated by placing them either between the underlying bone and the allograft or on top of the allograft. The results from this test article were striking with consistent and dramatic improvements in new bone formation and graft remodeling. The findings in the table below (assessed by independent radiologists from X-rays taken during the study) were corroborated by the histology results.
